In this talk, Quentin Wheeler-Bell offers a critical approach to addressing racial domination in and through education. Racial domination within society greatly impacts racial domination in schools (and vice-versa). Understanding the nature of racial domination or injustice in education thus requires a more general understanding of racial domination in the society—and how it shapes education. To understand racial justice in education requires a more general understanding of racial justice or non-domination in society—and how education would promote it. This talk addresses the nature of racial domination and three misconceptions about racial justice and education.

Quentin Wheeler-Bell is Associate Professor of Philosophy of Education in the Department of Educational Leadership & Policy Studies at Indiana University. His research interests include critical theory, critical pedagogy, democratic theory, and policy issues such as school choice, integration, and urban poverty. His work has appeared in Educational Policy, Educational Theory, Philosophical Inquiry in Education, Critical Education, and Journal of Curriculum Studies.
