The LEAD Center has received a five-year grant to continue the implementation and evaluation of a program to reduce stereotype bias that impedes advancement in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medical (STEMM) fields for underrepresented minority students.
The intervention will train research mentors —the person who works closest with students in training as scientists— about concepts of implicit bias, the effect bias has on underrepresented minority students in training, and the strategies and means to mitigate bias within labs, departments, and institutions.
This will be accomplished by:
Developing and implementing cycle-of-bias workshops for research mentors at UW-Madison and nationally.
Implementing train-the-trainer workshops to provide mentors with the knowledge needed to conduct workshops at their own institutions.
Disseminating Fair Play and its complementary curriculum and training materials at other institutions and in other venues.
